Week 5 of Galatians: The Pure Gospel

From Slave to Slave  

Sermon Snapshot: 

Paul makes clear in Galatians that we are not justified by circumcision or the law, but only through Jesus Christ are we justified before God.  In justification through Christ is where our faith rests.  He also make clear that we are freed from the law, and no more enslaved by the law.  So what is our response?  Shockingly, Paul encourages the Galatians to become slaves to each other through love.  Though this is initially a surprising move on Paul’s part, it is not without good reason.  You see, it makes a difference what or who enslaves us.

Galatians 5:13-14

Matthew 12:1-14  

Discussion Questions: 

1. What is your response to Paul’s encouragement for the Galatians to enter into slavery to one another?
2. What are your personal laws for living?
3. How much do these personal laws dictate what you do in your daily life?  Have you ever acted as thou you were enslaved to these laws?    
4. Do your laws ever present you from loving others well?  If so, how?  
5. What does entering into mutual slavery with others look like?  
6. If Paul encourages the Galatians to enter into slavery to one another, and notes that the law is fulfilled by loving one’s neighbor as one loves one’s own self what does this say about our relationship to God?

Sermon Snapshot: 

The Letter of Paul to the Galatians is an important letter written by Apostle Paul to churches in Galatia, a Roman Province.  Prior to writing this letter, Paul had some history with the folks of Galatia as he had founded churches there.  Paul’s letter was written in reaction to some troublesome news he had received about an alternative Gospel that was being taught to the Galatians by Jewish-Christian missionaries.  Problematic is the Jewish-Christian missionaries are espousing a new gospel that seems to include both circumcision and adherence to the Law.  Paul is adamant that the Gospel does not require circumcision and adherence to the Law.  In fact, he emphasizes that we are unable to be justified of our own effort; for justification to take place, we need Christ.

Discussion Questions: 

1. How do you define the Gospel?  Is grace a significant part of the Gospel?    

2. What does it mean to be justified before God?  

3. Why does it matter that one is justified before God?  

4. How significant is Jesus and his death and resurrection regarding the Gospel?  

5. Do you find the Gospel message easy or difficult to accept?  

6. Do you ever find yourself living as though you are attempting to adhere to a gospel similar to the gospel taught by the Jewish-Christian missionaries which Paul opposed?  

7. How do we as Christians ensure that we do not accept a false gospel?
